What are Division 2 Exotics?

In Division 2, exotics represent powerful items of the highest rarity tier that stand out thanks to their unique talents and attributes. What makes an exotic item good in The Division 2 are its exotic talent and utility. Let's dive in just a little bit.

Division 2 Exotic Talents

Each exotic item in the game has its own exotic talent. This exotic talent rolls with the same values for every player in the game. The only difference between 2 exotic items of the same type is their attributes' values.

Below, we compare 2x St Elmo's Engine to showcase that they both share the same talent that reads exactly the same, the only difference between them being the 3rd attribute and the attributes' values:

different exotics same attributes different exotics same talent

An exotic item's talent can only be found on that type of item. For example, you will never see an exotic mask rolled with a talent belonging to the holster type of item. Also, exotic talents cannot be rerolled!

This is pretty much everything you should know about exotic talents. Moving on, let's check out what types of exotics can be found in TD2. Sounds good, right?

Types of Division 2 Exotic Items

Division 2 has two main types of exotics: exotic weapons and exotic armor. These are also divided into multiple categories; to make things easier to understand, we'll briefly present all of them.

Division 2 Exotic Weapons

There are seven types of Weapon Exotics in The Division 2:

  • Exotic Assault Rifles (AR)
  • Exotic Sub Machine Guns (SMG)
  • Exotic Light Machineguns (LMG)
  • Exotic Rifles
  • Exotic Shotguns
  • Exotic Marksman Rifles (Snipers)
  • Exotic Pistols (Sidearms)

Division 2 Exotic Armor (Gear)

Also, there are six types of Armor Exotics in Division 2:

  • Exotic Masks
  • Exotic Backpacks
  • Exotic Chests
  • Exotic Gloves
  • Exotic Kneepads
  • Exotic Holsters

That's all for now; we won't go into details at this point. Later in the guide, we'll dive deep into every Division2 exotic weapon and armor, rank them, and see which are the best exotics per type, slot, and activity.

How many Exotics are in The Division 2?

When the vanilla game was released, there were just a few exotic items you could get, and they were extremely rare. In recent years, the game has received major content updates, all bringing additional exotics, whether via the WONY expansion, new seasons, new activities such as the Dark Hours and Iron Horse raids, The Summit, Descent, and the Paradise Lost incursion.

Just to give you an idea of what to expect in the future, each season usually brings two new exotics available through the season track, while activities such as incursions or new game modes only one, collectible as a random drop (like Ouroboros Exotic SMG) or guaranteed purchase from a vendor (such as Vindicator Exotic Rifle) in exchange for some currency.

Right now, in Year 6 Title Update 22 (2024), there are 50 exotics in The Division 2. However, expect some serious grinding and time investment, especially if you want to collect all of them!

How many Exotics can you equip in Division 2?

So we do have an amazing exotics pool to choose from and create various builds for our characters, but, unfortunately, there are some limitations on the number of exotic items you can simultaneously equip in The Division 2.

Here's how it goes: you can only equip one exotic weapon and one exotic armor simultaneously, meaning you cannot use more than two exotics, 2x exotic guns or 2x exotic armors in the same loadout, not even if they are different weapon/armor types!

So you cannot equip, let's say, two exotic assault rifles (same weapon class) but neither one exotic assault rifle and one exotic pistol (different weapon classes). It goes exactly the same with exotic armor.

You can carry all 50 Division 2 exotics in your inventory, but you can only use one exotic weapon and one exotic armor as active exotics at any moment.

Where can you get Exotics from in Division 2?

In Division 2 in 2024, you can get exotic items by:

  • Using the targeted loot feature in Countdown, The Summit, or open-world activities
  • Completing weekly projects such as The Summit, SHD Requisition, Weekly Legendary Stronghold, etc
  • Purchasing exotic caches from the DZ, Global Event, Descent, and Countdown Vendors
  • Completing Season tracks
  • Completing Global Event challenges
  • Completing the raids and the incursion
  • Obtaining them as random drops while killing enemies

It's very important to mention that in The Division 2, exotic items have various drop locations and drop chances: some can be target-farmed, others are random drops via exotic caches or mob drops, and others are guaranteed rewards for completing different activities.

Note: Opening an exotic cache guarantees you are getting an exotic item, but the item itself will be random.

We'll mainly focus on getting specific exotics so you will know precisely how to get every exotic item in Division2. In the next section, we'll briefly present the different drop locations and drop chances when targeting specific Division 2 exotics, not just random drops.

Division 2 Exotics drop locations

In The Division 2, you can target-farm and get specific exotics from:

  • Raids: Eagle Bearer, Regulus, The Ravenous
  • Incursion: Ouroboros
  • Exotic Quests: Regulus, Nemesis, Liberty, Ridgeway's Pride, Dodge City Holster
  • Vendor Purchases: Vindicator
  • Challenge Rewards: Capacitor
  • Legendary Activities: The Bighorn
  • Targeted Loot in Countdown, Summit, Open-World: All exotics in the game except the raid, incursion, and vendor ones

You can also get duplicates of the items locked behind exotic quests (Nemesis, Liberty, Ridgeway, etc.) or challenge rewards (Capacitor) using the targeted loot feature, but only once you have completed their exotic quest and have the blueprints unlocked on your account. As for the raid, incursion, and vendor ones, you cannot obtain them or their duplicates using the targeted loot feature.

Note: The only exceptions here are the Eagle Bearer and The Ravenous, which are also obtainable in the Dark Zone (so outside the raid), but have an extremely low drop chance.

Example 1: You haven't completed the Nemesis exotic quest, and you don't have the blueprint unlocked -> You cannot obtain a Nemesis sniper using the targeted loot feature in Countdown, Summit, or open-world.

Example 2: You have completed the Nemesis exotic quest, and you have the blueprint unlocked -> You can get a 2nd Nemesis Exotic Sniper if you target-farm snipers in Countdown, Summit, or open-world.

Example 3: You can drop a Capacitor using the targeted loot feature only after completing challenges in The Summit and unlocking its blueprint.

Example 4: You will never be able to get an Ouroboros SMG, a Regulus Pistol, or a Vindicator Rifle using the targeted loot feature, not even if you have already looted them and have their blueprints unlocked on your account.

Example 5: You can get an Eagle Bearer or The Ravenous outside the Dark Hours raid, from the Dark Zone, but you will never be able to drop them using the targeted loot in Countdown, Summit, or open-world.

Division 2 Exotics drop chance

In Division 2, there isn't a flat drop chance shared between all exotic weapons and armor. Instead, an exotic item's drop chance is related to the source you can get it from and the loot pool it belongs to.

To make it a bit easier to understand, in Division 2, exotics can have the following drop chances:

  • 100% chance guaranteed upon completing an exotic quest or specific challenges: Nemesis, Liberty, Regulus, Ridgeway, Dodge City Holster, Capacitor
  • 100% chance guaranteed purchase from the vendor in exchange for currency: Vindicator
  • High-medium drop chance if it is target-farmable and there are medium possible exotic drops belonging to that item's loot pool: Catharsis Mask (3 exotic masks in the pool)
  • Low drop chance if it is target-farmable and there are many possible exotic drops belonging to that item's loot pool: Mantis Sniper (4 exotic snipers in the pool)
  • 1% drop chance per boss kill per character per weekly reset; 10% drop chance per loot chest per character per weekly reset; 0,024% as a random drop in the Dark Zone for Eagle Bearer
  • 1% drop chance per boss kill uncapped and 10% drop chance per character per weekly reset in the incursion's final cache for Ouroboros

Division 2 Meta Exotics in 2024

What are Division 2 meta exotics?

The meta exotics in Division 2 are those exotic items that are the best-in-slot option in a particular item slot, mostly used in the end-game meta builds. For example, the Capacitor is arguably considered a meta-exotic weapon used in most end-game skill builds, thanks to its unique exotic talent. There is no better option to use as an exotic (or even high-end) assault rifle in the skill builds.

Division 2 Meta Exotics per weapon type:

  • Assault Rifles: St Elmo's Engine, Eagle Bearer, Capacitor
  • Snipers: Mantis, Nemesis
  • Shotguns: Scorpio
  • SMGs: Ouroboros, Lady Death
  • LMGs: Pestilence
  • Pistols: Regulus, Liberty
  • Rifles: The Ravenous, Diamondback

Division 2 Meta Exotics per armor slot:

Now that you've learned how to obtain the desired exotic items in Division 2, it's time to find out how to modify the exotics and make them god-rolls. Sounds good, right?

Division 2 Exotics Crafting

Can you craft exotic items in Division 2?

Yes, in The Division 2, you can craft certain exotics using the crafting station. To craft an exotic, you must gather the exotic item's components and blueprint & create the item from scratch. Examples: Nemesis, Liberty, Dodge Holster, Ridgeway's Pride, etc.

Division 2 Exotics Rerolling

Can you reroll exotic items in Division 2?

Yes, in Division 2, you can reroll exotics. You must already own the exotic item. Using the "Reconfigure" feature, you can donate the exotic item and some additional materials to create another variant, better or worse, depending on luck.

When rerolling exotic armor pieces, you will always get the same attributes but with different roll values. However, when rerolling an exotic weapon, you can change the 3rd attribute into another stat, while the core attributes will be the same as the original's, but of different values.

So, the core attributes (the 1st and the 2nd) cannot be rerolled into other stats, not even on exotic weapons; you will always get the same stats but of different roll quality.

Very important! When reconfiguring an exotic, the original exotic item is lost in the process, so make sure what you donate is bad enough to be worth gambling for a better variant. Otherwise, keep the original one and optimize it.

reconfiguring exotic

Division 2 Exotics Optimizing

Can you optimize exotic items in Division 2?

Yes, in Division 2, you can optimize any exotic weapon or armor using the Tinkering Station. You can optimize all three attributes on any exotic item here compared to the reconfiguring feature.

You simply select the attribute you want to be optimized, ensure you have the required items to optimize it (check out the "Cost to Optimize" section), and keep optimizing until you get max stats.

An exotic item with perfect stats at maximum values is called a God-Rolled exotic!

optimizing exotic

Division 2 Exotics Upgrading

Can you upgrade exotic items in Division 2?

Yes, in Division 2, you can upgrade exotics using the Proficiency and Expertise features. To upgrade an exotic item, you must first gain 10 proficiency ranks on it and become Proficient. Then, depending on your account expertise level, you can upgrade the exotic to that level.

Example: Let's suppose you want to upgrade your St Elmo's assault rifle, and your account's expertise level is 5. First, you start working on your St Elmo's proficiency levels by using it and killing enemies, donating materials or duplicates of it until you reach Proficiency Rank 10 and become Proficient with it.

Now, the item is eligible for expertise upgrading. At this point, you can upgrade it to maximum expertise level 5 because that is your current account expertise level. If you want to upgrade it further, you must first increase your account's expertise level to 6,7,8, etc, by becoming proficient with additional items. You cannot upgrade an exotic item beyond your overall expertise level!

This wraps up the introductory part on the Division 2 Exotics. At this point, you should know how to get the best exotic weapons and armor in the game so you can easily prepare the desired builds.

Division 2 Exotics Ranked. Tier Lists 2024

In the following sections, we'll dive deep into tier lists, showcasing the best Division 2 exotics ranked per item type and different PvE & PvP activities.

Tier lists explained

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that tier lists are always subjective, so they reflect my personal preferences. However, I have an impressive portfolio with over 10.000 hours invested in The Division games, so yeah, I guess you can trust me on what I'm about to share with you :) Right?

First, remember that you can only equip one exotic weapon and one exotic armor in a build at any given time. This is very important because when choosing the exotics for a build, you want them to be the optimal choices, if not the best-in-slot items for that particular loadout. Generally, exotics are game-changers, so always choose them wisely when creating your builds!

I will briefly explain each tier so you can better understand the rankings and why a specific exotic item deserves its spot within that tier:

  • S-Tier: Best-in-slot for multiple end-game meta builds, activities, and various scenarios; must-haves that can hardly be replaced by named or high-end items
  • A-Tier: Very high utility, impressive exotic talents, but have strong named/high-end competitors on the slot
  • B-Tier: Decent exotic talents, but with situational utility, that can easily be replaced by named/high-end items
  • C-Tier: Weak exotics, barely used in end-game builds, not recommended to go for
