Introduction

Welcome to our Marathon Cryo Archive Map Guide, your complete tactical breakdown of one of the most hostile environments in the game. In this guide, we explore the map’s enclosed structure, high-risk sectors, and intense close-quarters vaults to help you navigate Cryo Archive with control, awareness, and precision.

What is Cryo Archive?

Marathon’s Cryo Archive map is the most challenging area in the game, filled with traps, UESC bots, locked doors, and a Compiler at the top that can easily kill unprepared players. While it may seem manageable at first glance, the map introduces unique challenges that every Runner should be prepared for:

  • Enclosed and Layered Layout — Unlike more open maps, Cryo Archive is built around tight indoor sectors, narrow corridors, and multi-level facilities, limiting visibility and forcing Runners to clear angles carefully while staying alert for threats around every corner.
  • Close-Quarters Combat Focus — Due to confined spaces and constant line-of-sight breaks, engagements happen mostly at close range, rewarding fast reactions, precise movement, and strong positioning inside tight interiors.
  • High-Risk Loot Zones — Cryo Archive contains several key sectors where valuable loot and materials spawn, often turning these areas into high-pressure hotspots filled with both PvE enemies and competing Runners pushing for top-tier rewards.

The Cryo Archive map is only available for a limited time each week, from Thursday 10 AM PT to Sunday 10 AM PT. There are also certain conditions that have to be met in order to even attempt a run on this map:

  • Runner Level 25
  • All six factions unlocked (“Introducing” contracts completed)
  • Loadout value of 5,000 credits per run

Map Layout

Cryo Archive is one of the most intense and controlled environments in Marathon. It features a frozen, facility-based layout built around tight corridors, sealed sectors, and multi-level interiors. Located within a secured research complex, this high-risk area attracts Runners looking to extract valuable data and advanced materials while dealing with constant close-quarters threats and heavy resistance.

The key zones in Dire Marsh are:

  • Cargo
  • Index
  • Steerage
  • Control
  • Panopticon
  • Revival
  • Biostock
  • Preservation

Enemy encounters are frequent throughout key sectors, data hubs, and high-value loot zones, where both PvE threats and rival Runners actively contest resources. Limited sightlines caused by tight corridors and layered interiors make awareness critical, as enemies can appear instantly around corners or through adjacent sectors if you move carelessly inside the facility.

Security Clearance Explained

Cryo Archive's main map mechanic is the Security Clearances. There are 5 Security Clearances that lock off certain doors and wings of the UESC Marathon's first floor and you need to level up your team's Security Clearance to access them.

Everyone will start off in a corner of the map, with 4 teams per run. Your Security Clearance will allow you to slowly get closer to the center of the Cryo Archive itself, reaching Control and the Panopticon.

To upgrade your Security Clearance, you need to find Security Tags. These are small Priority Items that can be found in a number of locations:

  • Looting UESC forces
  • Looting UESC Commanders, Wardens, and Priority Targets
  • Lying around the map on the floor
  • Killing other Runners

Each tier of a Security Clearance requires more Security Tags, initially starting off with just 3 tags needed to reach Clearance Level 1. The amount needed is based off the cumulative total your team has and if you drop any Security Tags, your Security Clearance level will go down.

These locked rooms open up shortcuts back to other levels of the Cryo Archive, secret loot rooms, unique hidden wings of the ship, and more.

Cryo Archive Vaults

The Cryo Archive consists of 6 vaults which can be opened with Cryo Archive keys found on other maps, alongside solving a complex set of puzzles for each one. These keys can be found in your own runs. Each key will open a vault and these vaults contain high-tier containers with valuables, salvage, and materials.

Each vault will contain a subroutine which can be extracted. If you enter Cryo Archive with all six subroutines in your Codex, as well as a DNA Access Card, you will be able to unlock the mysterious 7th vault inside the Cryo Archive, which contains the best loot and the Compiler, a deadly boss which you will need to defeat to obtain exclusive weapons, salvage, and loot.

To open any of these vaults you will need the corresponding vault key, which can be found from a variety of locations and high-loot areas on Perimeter, Dire Marsh, Outpost, and Cryo Archive.

You will also need a collection of batteries which are scattered throughout the map and a Filled Cryo Coolant container. The empty ones can be found in Preservation, then taken to the bottom of the Control tower and filled up in the machine. You can shoot the small green panels to remove the frosted-out floor temporarily.

The Compiler Boss

The Compiler is a special enemy type in Cryo Archive. Located only within the Marathon itself after entering Vault 7, the Compiler is a boss fight which you will need to complete to access the most valuable and rarest loot in Vault 7.

It is only available upon opening Vault 7, which requires all six of the other subroutines Salvage items from Vaults 1-6, as well as a DNA Access Card, which is a Superior Key that drops randomly in Cryo Archive runs from Wardens.

Mechanics

To defeat the Compiler, you need to follow the green orb that is in the room after you enter Vault 7. Follow it up the jumping puzzle to find a room with supplies, as well as an exfill which can be used after the fight.

The Compiler fight itself is fairly simple. When the fight starts, the Compiler will shoot out a green laserbeam at players, and occasionally open its cloak. When it opens its cloak, you will be able to damage the green core at the center of the chest.

Additionally, the Compiler can fire three slow-moving green orbs which will knock out anywhere from 50%-90% of your health if you are hit by them. Therefore, you need to shoot and destroy them before they hit you or your teammates.

The only mechanic to this fight involves 9 terminals around the room. Simply activate 3 terminals with the same symbol to begin the damage phase of the fight. Stand inside the bubble at the center of the arena and shoot the Compiler's core, before shooting his chest when his cloak opens.

Once the Compiler is down, you can loot its body for a Compiler Ganglion, which is a rare piece of Salvage. Head to the back of the room, to find yourself on the edge of the UESC Marathon with a bunch of loot to collect. Once the fight is finished, you can extract and exfil from the Cryo Archive.

Tips & Tricks

We've spent a good amount of time exploring, looting, and fighting on Cryo Archive. Here are some helpful tips that should hopefully keep you alive as you're exploring this challenging ship:

  • Play Angles Slowly in Tight Corridors - Cryo Archive is built around narrow hallways and sharp corners, so clearing angles step by step is key to avoiding sudden ambushes.
  • Expect Constant Close-Quarters Fights - Most engagements happen at short range inside the facility, making SMGs, shotguns, and fast-reacting loadouts extremely effective.
  • Clear PvE Before Committing to Loot - High-value sectors are often heavily guarded, and prolonged fights can quickly draw in other Runners from nearby rooms.
  • Use Doors, Corners, and Cover Efficiently - Interior structures like doorways and tight cover points are your best defensive tools. Peek smart and avoid overexposing yourself.
  • Control Rotations Between Sectors - Moving between key areas can be risky due to choke points. Timing your rotations properly helps you avoid getting trapped or third-partied.
  • Pay Attention to Audio and Nearby Activity - Sound travels clearly in enclosed spaces, so footsteps, gunfire, and ability usage can reveal enemy positions before you see them.

Conclusion

Mastering Cryo Archive becomes much easier once you understand its tight layout, high-risk sectors, and common rotation paths between key areas. With the right timing and positioning, you can move through corridors efficiently, control dangerous choke points, avoid sudden close-range engagements, and secure valuable loot before rival Runners collapse on your position.

Learn the terrain, anticipate common rotation paths, and use natural cover to your advantage — and Dire Marsh will reward Runners who stay alert, manage their engagements carefully, and extract with valuable loot.
