Complete Guide to Marathon Factions

Introduction

Welcome to our Marathon Complete Factions Guide, where we break down each faction’s objectives, reputation progression, and reward tiers to help you advance efficiently across Tau Ceti IV. Learn how to optimize your loadout, choose the right contracts, and plan smart extraction routes to complete faction tasks quickly while maximizing reputation and rewards.

What are Factions?

In Marathon, factions form the core of long-term progression, acting as a voluntary, reputation-driven system that allows Runners to align with powerful organizations operating across Tau Ceti IV.

Instead of mandatory wipes or forced resets common in other extraction shooters, Marathon’s faction system lets you choose who to work for, which contracts to pursue, and how to shape your progression through deliberate decisions and successful extractions.

There are a total of 6 factions in the game, and they are as follows:

  • Arachne
  • CyberAcme
  • MIDA
  • NuCaloric
  • Sekiguchi
  • Traxus

Each faction represents a distinct ideology, playstyle focus, and reward path, offering unique gear, upgrades, and long-term benefits. Your relationship with these factions evolves entirely through your actions in the field, making faction progression a strategic choice rather than an obligation.

Factions Overview

Each faction in Marathon needs to be ranked up (maximum rank is 30 for each one), and after each rank, you get a rewards box with specific rewards tied to that faction. Here is a table with what each faction gives and what their focus is:

Faction Name Focus Best Upgrades
CyberAcme Utility and Heat Management. Faster ability cooldowns, massive Heat reduction, and expanded Vault space.
NuCaloric Shields and Sustain. Access to high-tier blue shields, faster healing speeds, and free Shield Chargers in the Armory.
Traxus Long-Range Weaponry and Economy. Unlocks precision rifles, sniper rifles, and deluxe barrel/optic modifications.
Arachne PvP Aggression. Fast time-to-kill buffs, melee damage increases, and access to LMGs and Shotguns.
Sekiguchi Runner Abilities and Cores. Unlocks class-specific Cores that drastically alter how your Shell's abilities function.
MIDA Disruption and Mobility. Faster movement speeds, higher jumps, and access to explosives and area denial tools.

What Faction to Focus

Every faction in Marathon has its own set of contracts, rewards, and upgrade trees that you can work your way through at any time. Your Runner Shell preference will determine which faction you should aim to build a strong reputation with first.

For example, if you're playing as the Destroyer, you should aim to earn reputation from Traxus because they offer items that reduce the cost of shield implants in the Black Market.

Now that we named each of them, we will talk more in detail about each one so you know what faction you should rank up.

Arachne

Arachne is a death cult, and as you might expect from people who are obsessed with death, they want you to kill other Runners. It's unclear what rewards Arachne offers for completing contracts. If we had to guess, the rewards will most likely aid you in taking down enemy Runners.

Contract Name Objective
Arachne Priority Contract Eliminate 10 downed Runners.

CyberAcme

CyberAcme is responsible for the systems that allow people to upload their consciousness into shells. By extracting valuable materials from Tau Ceti, CyberAcme will upgrade your Shell, making you more durable than ever before.

Contract Name Objective
Welcome to Tau Ceti [1/2] In a single run, defeat 3 UESC enemies & Scan FTL array at any UESC radio tower in Perimeter.
Welcome to Tau Ceti [2/2] Sabotage a UESC comms antenna in North or South Relay.
Introducing: Traxus In a single run, hack a terminal at Intersection, Complex, or Bio-Research, acquire Shipping Manifest from UESC Commander, and scan the nearby stacked shipping container before it is picked up.
Introducing: NuCaloric In a single run, acquire NuCal Employee ID from infested building in Colums and download employee data from terminal nearby.
Introducing: MIDA In a single run, defeat UESC across Tau Ceti IV and smash glass across Tau Ceti IV.

Prime Time In a single run, use your prime ability & defeat 5 hostile Runners.
Deconstructed I In a single run, deliver 8 Salvage to DCON.

MIDA

MIDA is one of the factions featured in the original Marathon trilogy, so we know considerably more about its motives. In the previous games, MIDA was a political party that transformed into a terrorist organization after years of feuding with the UESC. As explosive experts, MIDA is obsessed with blowing things up, and its contracts revolve around destroying things.

Contract Name Objective
Order/Chaos In a single run, trigger alarms in south Complex by hacking a terminal, acquire security Commander credentials & download data from terminal inside south Maintenance.
Truth/Lies In a single run, aquire a Transponder from second-floor Flight Control, hack Transponder at first-floor terminal in Flight Control & upload malware to dropships outside of Flight Control.
Protect/Destroy [1/4] In a single run, destroy the bio-sample analyzer inside west Quarantine, acquire UESC Biohazard Sample & deliver it to DCON.
Protect/Destroy [2/4] In a single run, download malware from terminal in West Gate gatehouse, submit a dropship request south of Canal & upload malware to the UESC dropship.

Protect/Destroy [4/4] In a single run, download shipping manifest from terminal in northwest Processing, then scan tagged containers in Airfield, then hack second-floor terminal in Flight Control.

NuCaloric

Nucaloric is represented by Gaius: a plain, pink, expressionless head with a well-spoken voice. Gaius explains in-game that the company exists to "feed, clothe, and supply humanity with its most basic needs." As major stakeholders in the colony, the contracts offered by Nucaloric require you to learn why the original Marathon expedition failed over a century ago.

Contract Name Objective
Data Reconstruction I In a single run, scan 2 Sparkleaf Bioprinters in Sout Relay, scan 2 Fungal Bioprinters in Overflow, and download Agriculture Report in North Relay.
Data Reconstruction II Download harvest logs from Algae Ponds & hack Data Repositories in AI Uplink.
Data Reconstruction III In a single run, deliver Unstable Biomass to DCON & loot 10 containers.
Nano Metrics I In a single run, download malware from terminal in West Gate gatehouse, submit a dropship request south of Canal & upload malware to the UESC dropship.
One Thousand Slimy Things I In a single run, destroy 2 Tick Nests and exfil with 3 Chitin Samples.

Sekiguchi

Sekiguchi is similar to CybeAcme; it's responsible for the Weaveform technology used to create the shell bodies worn by Runners. We don't know Sekiguchi's intentions as the faction is brand new to the Marathon universe. In the Visions of Marathon video, the Sekiguchi representative is Nona, a white, winged insect with red eyes and several arms.

Contract Name Objective
Cutthroat Competition I In a single run, loot 2 Deimosite Rods in Field Maintenance & exfil successfully.

Traxus

As the richest and most powerful faction in Marathon, Traxus uses its money to influence Tau Ceti from the shadows. Traxus makes its money by focusing on resource extraction, with various contracts in the alpha tests asking players to disrupt the UESC's supply chain. Traxus' contracts will primarily ask you to find specific weapons and weapon mods.

Contract Name Objective
Cutthroat Competition I In a single run, loot 2 Deimosite Rods in Field Maintenance & exfil successfully.
Equitable Distribution [1/4] In a single run, steal UESC Data Drive from Hauler then deliver self-erasing data drive to DCON in Valley.
Equitable Distribution [2/4] In a single run, hack UESC security terminal in Algae Ponds, exfil with UESC Supplies from Transport Drone & exfil with drone manifest from Transport Drone.
Equitable Distribution [3/4] In a single run, scan drones in Station and tunnels beneath, loot munitions crates in Overflow & deliver Unstable Compounds to DCON in Valley.
Equitable Distribution [4/4] In a single run, trace commander location at terminal in South Relay bunker, then eliminate the UESC Commander.

Contract System

Factions rank up when you earn reputation, and you earn reputation by completing their specific contracts. You can only carry one active contract per deployment. You need to pick your objective before you queue, and your entire run should revolve around completing that specific goal. There are 2 types of contracts:

  • Priority Contracts - These are one-time, high-value narrative missions. They are mandatory if you want to push your Faction Rank to the next major tier.
  • Standard Contracts - These are highly repeatable, low-risk objectives like looting specific containers or extracting basic salvage. They offer steady, reliable reputation gains.

Regardless of the type of contract, they'll usually task you with finding, looting, killing, destroying, or otherwise interacting with things during runs across the various Marathon maps, sometimes requiring you to complete every objective in a single run.

You'll also get faction reputation from completed contracts, but each faction has other ways to earn reputation based around their ideal. Earning reputation goes towards increasing your rank with that faction, granting you access to superior seasonal upgrades which must then be unlocked with the required Credits and Salvage.

Conclusion

Faction progression represents one of the most meaningful long-term systems in Marathon, rewarding deliberate planning, consistent execution, and smart decision-making across multiple runs.

Your relationship with each faction is built over time through completed contracts, successful extractions, and efficient risk management, directly shaping the gear, upgrades, and advantages available to you as a Runner.
