Flying in WoW Shadowlands and Zereth Mortis

Flying represents the fastest mode of movement in World of Warcraft. Whether you are leveling your character, questing, or working on your professions, it's crucial to maximize your movement speed while traveling between the different zones on the map. In Patch 9.2.7, players unlock flying at level 30 and can upgrade it at level 40 for a maximum flight speed increase of 310%.

Compared to the previous expansions, in Shadowlands, you don't have to complete a Pathfinder achievement to unlock flying in the newly introduced continent, but instead, you must now obtain an item called Memories of Sunless Skies that unlocks account-wide flying access for all characters Level 50+ in the expansion's new zones.

Additionally, Zereth Mortis (the final Shadowlands zone introduced in Patch 9.2 in 2022) has its own flying requirements locked behind completing a meta-achievement called Unlocking the Secrets.

Why do you need flying access in Shadowlands and Zereth Mortis?

The answer is straightforward: to maximize the grinding efficiency and have the best experience when it comes to enjoying your favorite game. As gamers, we all want to get the best value out of our playing sessions, and it's not a secret that World of Warcraft is an extremely grinding game that involves a lot of traveling around the map.

Trust me, if you aim high and you want to reach the end game as soon as possible, flying.in Shadowlands and Zereth Mortis is mandatory, especially when working on multiple characters. These are the places where you will be spending most of your time as a level 60 character, and you want to complete the activities within these zones fast, simple as that.

There are a couple of reasons why you must unlock flying in Shadowlands and Zereth Mortis:

  • Faster daily and world quests completion for reputation and gear
  • Efficient rare monsters farming for their unique rewards
  • Unlock access to hidden treasure chests located on higher ground
  • Faster resource gathering when working on your professions

1. Flying while completing Daily Quests and World Quests

With the introduction of Patch 9.2, you have a lot of daily quests and world quests to complete in WoW Shadowlands' new zones, especially if you are working on your reputation with the newly introduced factions. Flying in Shadowlands makes it much faster as you can avoid all the ground enemies on the roads, fly to the quests' locations, complete them, and turn them in. And there is plenty of them to complete!

2. Flying makes the rare monsters farming easier

When it comes to elite monsters farming in Shadowlands and Zereth Mortis, flying equals winning. If you can't fly in these zones and travel by ground mount, you don't stand a chance to get to the enemy in time, tag it and kill it.

Why? - You might ask; because other players that have flying unlocked will always be ahead of you, reach the spawn locations faster and eliminate the enemy before you even get there. Trust me, I've been there, and it's been painful. Everybody is hunting down these elites for their unique rewards, as some of the items they drop sell for dozens of thousands of gold.

3. Fly to unlock hidden treasure chests

You must learn how to fly if you want to open the hidden treasure chests around Shadowlands and Zereth Mortis for their unique rewards. You will be dealing with many enemies while ground-traveling to these chests, and flying makes it much easier.

4. Flying makes your resource gathering much faster

Finally, if you are working on your professions, it's mandatory to unlock flying before anything. You will be much more efficient if you fly while completing your resource farming routes.

How to unlock Shadowlands flying in Patch 9.2.7

As previously stated, Shadowlands makes the exception with no Pathfinder flying achievement, so no more reputation grinding to unlock flying access on the new continent. The expansion has already been out for quite some time, and since its release, things have changed a lot in terms of how fast you can nowadays unlock flying in the new areas.

Thanks to the most recent patches, you can fly in Shadowlands reasonably quickly, but you still have a simple set of requirements to meet to qualify for that.

Note: For now, we'll focus on Shadowlands basic flying and treat Zereth Mortis flying unlock separately later in the guide.

Here are the flying requirements you must meet before you learn how to fly in Shadowlands:

  • You must reach Renown 44 and complete your Covenant campaign (Chapters 9/9).
  • You must complete the first four chapters of the Chains of Domination campaign, with "The Last Sigil" chapter included (Chapters 4/9).
  • Completing these two steps will get you the Memories of Sunless Skies item.
  • Opening this item unlocks account-wide flying in the 4 Shadowlands zones: Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth.

You can track down your Renown level by clicking the icon on the minimap and your campaign's progress by opening your quests log:

Your job's done when you have obtained and used the Memories of Sunless Skies item and learned how to fly in Shadowlands. Congrats on your WoW Shadowlands flying achievement!

Where can you fly in Shadowlands?

As previously stated, opening that item unlocks account-wide flying in Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Ravendreth. What about the other zones in Shadowlands? Unfortunately, you can only fly in the 4 Covenant zones mentioned before, so you cannot fly inside The Maw, Korthia, or Oribos.

Note: However, there are some teleporters you can use in The Maw and Korthia that will make traveling in these areas much faster. To unlock those teleporters, you must complete a few quests in those areas and obtain a certain reputation with their faction quartermasters.

In the Maw, you can travel to the following locations by using this type of teleporter:

And here you can see where you can travel by using the Korthia teleporter:

Shadowlands riding and flying skill changes in 2022

As the level cap in Shadowlands was squished down to 60, this also affected the levels at which you learn new riding skills. So here are the level requirements for each riding skill in Shadowlands in Patch 9.2.7:

Riding Skill Name Type & Speed Unlocks At
Apprentice Riding 60% ground speed Level 10
Journeyman Riding 100% ground speed Level 20
Expert Riding 150% flight speed Level 30
Master Riding 310% flight speed Level 40

Now you know everything about how to get flying in WoW Shadowlands in Patch 9.2.7. Moving on, this brings us to the second part of our World of Warcraft flying guide: the Zereth Mortis flying unlock. So let's teach you how to fly in Zereth Mortis.

Why do you need to fly in Zereth Mortis?

So why should you unlock flying in Zereth Mortis in the first place? Is it beneficial and really that important for your characters' progression? Absolutely!

We've already pointed out that Zereth Mortis represents the newest and final zone added in the World of Warcraft Shadowlands expansion, and here is where the 9.2 end-game adventure begins. To start with, let's see what you will be doing in Zereth Mortis. The activities within this area drop the highest itlvl gear among all Shadowlands' zones.

First, you have the Cypher gear, which is directly dependent on your Cypher Console's upgrades and can get up to level 252 for a fully upgraded console in Exile's Hollow. So if you upgrade your console to 6/6, all the gear that drops from open-world activities in Zereth Mortis (such as daily quests and world quests) will be 252 item level.

example of cypher console max level example of cypher gear itlvl 252

These activities go hand-in-hand with the area's faction reputation grinding, The Enlightened, which you will want to get to at least Revered status, for unique rewards obtained from the quartermaster Vilo located in Haven, such as Memory of Unity for double legendary crafting, Recipe: Crafter's Mark of the First Ones for itlvl 262 crafts, or Decanter of Untapped Potential to learn and raise all of your conduits to level 239.

Obtaining the Revered status with The Enlightened takes some time, though. To reach that point, you will be traveling a lot daily to complete these open-world activities, so Zereth Mortis flying is a must-have if you plan on achieving that as soon as possible.

enlightened revered rewards

Back to gear worth going for is the gear sold by the NPC Rafiq, located in Pilgrim's Grace, that sells itlvl 246 items in exchange for Sandworn Relics. The items sold by Rafiq are extremely valuable, especially if you are willing to get the 4 set class bonus for your character and you don't have a team to raid, PvP, or complete Mythic dungeons with.

rafiq npc location

Note: Not many players know that these items can be converted to set items in the Catalyst Gardens, at the Creation Catalyst Console.

Alright, but what does this have to do with learning how to fly in Zereth Mortis? Well, those Sandworn Relics can be obtained by opening Sandworn Chests in the Endless Sands area, an end-game zone full of level 61 Elite enemies. You guessed it, being able to fly in this area helps a lot! Like the Shadowlands Covenant zones, flying is highly beneficial when farming for Rare mobs, treasures, and resources in Zereth Mortis.

Now that you know WHY you must learn how to fly in Zereth Mortis, let's see the flying requirements for this area, shall we?

How to unlock Zereth Mortis flying?

Since Patch 9.2, players unlock Zereth Mortis flying upon completing a meta-achievement called Unlocking the Secrets. Like Shadowlands flying, once you learn how to fly in Zereth Mortis on one character, the upgrade will also apply to all your other characters, so it's an account-wide unlock. So you will only go through the following process once, and you're done.

Now let's see what's behind this meta-achievement and the requirements you must meet to unlock flying in Zereth Mortis. There are six achievements you must work on and complete to finish this meta-achieve:

There is no particular order you must complete these achievements on, so it's up to you how you prioritize them. You will be asked to explore the Zereth Mortis zone and complete several chapters of its campaign, a couple of side missions, looting some treasures, and killing some rare monsters.

You will be facing a lot of traveling around the map to complete these achievements, so to make your Zereth Mortis flying unlock easier, I highly recommend using two addons: Handynotes: Shadowlands and TomTom.

Handynotes reveals the spawn locations for all the treasures and rare monsters on the map, and with TomTom, you can track down and go to specific coordinates to open these treasures, kill the rare elites and loot the required quest items to complete these achievements.

Now we'll go through each of these achievements and teach you the fastest way to complete them to unlock your Zereth Mortis flying skill ASAP.

1. Explore Zereth Mortis

This achievement's title is self-explanatory. To complete the achievement, you have to explore the following areas in Zereth Mortis:

Path of Inception Pilgrim's Grace Dimensional Falls
The Great Veldt Arrangement Index Provis Fauna
Terrace of Formation Resonant Peaks Zovaal's Grasp
Deserted Overlook Haven Plain of Actualization
The Dread Portal Faith's Repose Lexical Glade
Genesis Fields Catalyst Gardens

After you explore all the zones, you will receive the achievement that looks like this:

explore zereth mortis achievement

2. Tales of the Exile

The Tales of the Exile achievement requires you to collect seven pages of "Firim in Exile" located around Zereth Mortis. TomTom addon makes it very easy as you must simply paste the coordinates in the chat box, go to the locations and pick up the items. Here are the exact TomTom coordinates where you can find each page:

Item TomTom Coordinates Command Description
Firim in Exile, Part 1 /way 35.7, 55.4 Near the stone wall
Firim in Exile, Part 2 /way 41.7, 62.4 In Bitterbeak's nest
Firim in Exile, Part 3 /way 37.6, 46.1 In the bushes
Firim in Exile, Part 4 /way 49.9, 76.6 On the platform
Firim in Exile, Part 5 /way 38.9, 31.1 In the cave
Firim in Exile, Part 6 /way 67.3, 25.2 Behind the Coreless Scarabid
Firim in Exile, Part 7 /way 64.8, 33.7 Close to Akkaris spawn location

To make things even easier, here are some screenshots for a better view of each page's location:

firim page 2 firim page 3 firim page 4
firim page 5 firim page 6 firim page 7

3. Curious Collections

To complete this Zereth Mortis flying requirement, you must discover and collect ANY five hidden treasures across Zereth Mortis. This is one of the most accessible parts of the Unlocking the Secrets meta-achievement. Make sure you use the Handynotes addon, and you will have it done in no time.

Here are some of the easiest-to-get treasures and the coordinates where you can find them:

Treasure Name TomTom Coordinates Command Description
Library Vault /way 58.84, 77.15 Press the tablet to unlock the cache
Filched Artifact /way 49.75, 87.25 Simply jump on the orbs and collect it
Stolen Scroll /way 34.04, 67.65 Located in Haven base, behind the tent
Damaged Jiro Stash /way 38.27, 37.23 Climb on the pillar and collect
Symphonic Vault /way 52.62, 63.01 Press the four consoles in the correct order

4. Adventures in Zereth Mortis

This is the most annoying part of the Zereth Mortis flying skill unlock. To complete this part, you must defeat ten rare mobs in Zereth Mortis. I find it the most difficult of the six achievements because you will barely get to the mobs in time before the other players, who can already fly in Zereth Mortis, take them down.

For this task, Handynotes addon is a must-have! Keep your map open and once you spot one of the rare mobs, run to it. It will take you some time to kill ten rares, but you can have it done anywhere between 30-60 minutes.

5. Path to Enlightenment

Before going for this one, make sure you have completed Chapter 3 of the Secrets of the First Ones campaign, "Forming an Understanding". This achievement requires you to complete three chain quests in Zereth Mortis:

  • "Small Pet Problems" - Go to /way 34.6, 66.2 and talk to Tamra NPC in Haven
  • "Not AI Are Lost" - Go to /way 33.8, 64.6 and talk to Al'dalil NPC in Haven
  • "The Waters of Grace" - Go to /way 61.8, 53.6 and talk to Olem in Pilgrim's Grace

6. A Means to an End

This gets us to the final part of the Zereth Mortis flying meta-achievement. You must complete the Secrets of the First Ones 11-quest storyline "A means to an End," ending with "Arbiter in the Making".

Congratulations, you've just learned how to fly in Zereth Mortis! At this point, you are the proud owner of account-wide flying access in both Shadowlands and Zereth Mortis!

How to travel between Oribos and Zereth Mortis

There is one last aspect I'd like to cover before we wrap things up: how to get from Zereth Mortis to Oribos or vice-versa. You cannot fly by yourself between these two zones. However, these two areas are connected by two portals, one in each zone. So the only way to travel between these areas is by using these special portals. I'll tell you exactly where you can find them:

In Oribos, the portal that takes you to Zereth Mortis can be found in the Ring of Transference (north side). Here is a screenshot for a better view:

portal from oribos to zereth mortis

In Zereth Mortis, the portal that teleports you to Oribos is located in the Geometric Cavern (in Haven), and it looks like this:

Shadowlands & Zereth Mortis Flying - FAQ

2. How long does it take to unlock flying in Shadowlands?

Once you unlock access to the Shadowlands content at around level 50, it can take you anywhere between 10-20 hours to get your Memories of Sunless Skies and learn how to fly.

3. How much does it cost to learn the Shadowlands flying skill?

You automatically unlock your Shadowlands flying skill for free when you obtain the abovementioned item. So there is no extra training fee you must pay to learn how to fly in Shadowlands. Unfortunately, in Shadowlands, you cannot fly by yourself between Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, or Revendreth.
