Class Overview

A class loved by the players, the Witch is a returning favorite in Path of Exile 2, focused on dealing elemental or Chaos Damage and summoning, being an intelligence-based necromancer-type class.

Having two different starting resources, the versatility of the Witch is very high, and the Witch can easily use the Spirit resource to summon a variety of minions while having mana to deal damage, curse enemies, or use utility-type spells to aid in battle.

Class Archetype

While Path of Exile 2 offers the player complete freedom to use any weapon or skill-set in the game, the Witch is mostly a ranged-based class, using the distance to her advantage with powerful curses, minions to do her bidding, and devastating spells.

The playstyle choices in the ranged variant are plentiful, and you can choose between the Occult and Elemental skill tree recommendations or even combine them.

Class Resource

  • Mana – One of the most common resources in any game, mana is used for casting most of the spells, with the Witch being a mana-hungry class.
  • Spirit – Also a universal resource found in Path of Exile 2, the Witch mainly uses the spirit to summon minions, auto-cast, or auto-cast on elemental ailments.
  • Demonflame & Infernal Flame – Only available after ascending to Elementalist, the Demonflame is a resource that empowers the caster only in Demon Form while also dealing constant Damage and Infernal Flame is a mana replacement that also empowers the caster.
  • Life – Can also be used as a resource by either speccing the Blood Magic passive key node or using the Blood Mage ascendancy.

Damage Type

As we have mentioned before, the Witch is a versatile class even in the damage type it can deal and excel in, as follows:

  • Physical Damage – Mainly used in bone-based blood mage builds, which deal immense amounts of damage while also having utility skills.
  • Elemental Damage – The Witch can quickly excel in dealing any elemental Damage, using skills from the elemental skill gem tree, while also being able to convert physical or elemental Damage into other types of elemental Damage. This opens possibilities to combine skills of different elements into compelling synergies.
  • Chaos Damage – Just like the elemental Damage, other types of Damage can be converted into Chaos Damage, which deals even more Damage to monsters since they have no chaos resistance but have elemental resistances.
  • Extra Elemental/Chaos Damage – By using the "Gain #% of Damage as Extra Element/Chaos Damage" affix, you can easily deal more types of Damage, ensuring that no monster with a specific element resistance stands in your way.
  • Add Damage to Attacks – By using the "Adds # to # Type of damage to Attacks" modifier, you can also diversify the type of Damage you deal, but sadly, this only applies to physical attacks, not spells, so it doesn't benefit the Witch that much.

Witch Weapons

While the Witch can equip all weapon types in the game, the ones you can get the most power out of are:

  • WandThe most used weapon by the Witch class, the wand provides more options than the two-handed staff and can be used in combination with focuses, scepters, and shields in any build.
  • Focus – This offhand is oriented towards providing more damage to spells, which is best for caster builds. Aside from damage-oriented use, the focus' only implicit modifier offers the player a flat value Energy Shield.
  • Scepter – The most helpful weapon for minion-based or auto-casting builds, the Scepter is the only weapon that provides spirit. It also offers powerful buffs to the user, allies, and minions.
  • Staff – The only type of two-handed weapon useful on the Witch, the staff provides the same modifiers as the wand but with higher values.
  • Shield – For a more defensive approach, the shield offers excellent resistance to the enemies while also providing the "Raise Shield" skill. This offhand is used almost exclusively with the Scepter in minion builds.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Like any class in the game, the Witch has some strengths and weaknesses that we will discuss in the following chapter.

Strengths

  • Master Summoner – The Witch is able to raise an army of minions of different types, ranging from tanks to damage dealers. The summoned minions will revive on their own after a short period. Our favorite minion type is the Skeletal Arsonist because of their insane damage-dealing potential by detonating other minions.
  • Incredible Elemental Damage – Can easily use any elemental Damage, even combining them for significant synergies and multiple types of Damage, avoiding specific elemental resistance buffs for elite or magic enemies while also being able to curse monsters, reducing their resistances for even higher damage potential.
  • Destructive Chaos Damage – Witches are the best chaos-wielding class, using skills like Contagion to clear entire screens without breaking a sweat.
  • Tons of Utility – Multiple choices of utility skills, ranging from pinning enemies to using frost walls to block the path of the foes, being able to maintain the distance so there's no threat nearby.
  • High Versatility – Being one of the most versatile classes in the game, the Witch can excel in dealing Damage of all types, use minions to destroy enemies, and curse monsters to reduce their resistances and stats. There are no limits to the combinations you can do with the Witch, so feel free to experiment.

Weaknesses

While the Witch's strength might look great and make you want to jump straight into the game, we should also discuss the weaknesses of this class so you know what to expect.

  • Squishy – Compared to other classes, the Witch is more of a glass cannon class. Most of the builds focus on Damage on both the passive tree and gear, while maximum life and resistances fall in second place.
  • Resource Hungry – While the spell costs start low, they ramp quickly towards the early endgame with higher-level spells. To combat this, a lot of mana and mana regeneration rate modifiers are necessary to have on gear and the passive tree.
  • Low count of useful skills – Not many skills will be useful for the Witch, with most popular builds usually revolving around the same playstyle.
  • High support gem necessity – To reach the high damage ceiling we all aim for, you will need to use all three types of Jeweler's Orb to insert new sockets into at least one of the primary skills used in the build.
  • Positioning – As we have said, the Witch is more fragile than other classes, so a low action-per-minute playstyle is not suitable for this class, positioning being key in every moment you are in a fight.
  • Gear Dependency – In addition to the high skill requirement, the Witch will need great gear to reach the full potential of any build.

Witch Stats Priority

  • IntelligenceThe most valuable attribute for the Witch by far, it complements the spell skills very well while not providing Damage to them. It is required for most equipment that grants Energy Shield and two mana for each point you have. For every five intelligence, you will gain a Support Gem Capacity point, raising the number of support gems with INT requirement you can use for your build.
  • Strength – Beneficial for very squishy builds, it allows the players to use armour that grants either Armor or, in combination with the INT attribute, it will enable equipping armour that grants Armor and Energy Shield. It provides two life for every point you have and offers a STR-based Support Gem Capacity points for every five strength.
  • Dexterity – Least valuable attribute for Witches, the dexterity opens the possibility to equip armor that grants Evasion Rating. For every point of dexterity spent, you gain five accuracy rating; for every five points, you gain a dexterity-based Support Gem Capacity point.

Each of the attributes mentioned above will also be required for equipping skills, support gems, and persistent buff skill gems, depending on the gem type (color of the skill) and the level of the skill.

Witch Ascendancies

At the moment, Early Access to Path of Exile 2 presents us with two of the three ascendancies that will be available at the full release of the game.

The Ascendancy, also known as a subclass, is an addition to the passive tree, in the middle of it, that will further let you customize your build and raise its power even further. It is unlocked in Act 2 after completing the Trial of the Sekhemas, providing 2 Ascendancy Points.

To further unlock Ascendancy Points, the following two points will be unlocked by completing the Trial of Chaos in Act 3, after obtaining the Inscribed Ultimatum by slaying Xyclucian, the Chimera, in the Chimera Wetlands.

The other four Ascendancy Points will be obtained by completing the Trial of the Sekhemas and Trial of Chaos at a much higher difficulty, with an area level of 75 or above. If you don't have a fully optimized endgame build, these will be extremely hard, so save your Djinn Baryas and Inscribed Ultimatums.

Note: Once chosen, the Ascendancy is permanent, and there is no way to change it.

Blood Mage

blood mage ascendancy

A very powerful choice that will trade life for more power, the Blood Mage will gain incredible new strengths from this Ascendancy, such as:

  • Sanguimancy – Skills gain a Base Life Cost equal to Base Mana Cost and grants the Life Remnants skill, which will spawn a Remnant every critical hit (2s cooldown) and with a 25% chance after killing an enemy, and will restore Life when picked up.
  • Vitality Siphon – 10% of Spell Damage Leeched as Life - Will provide great sustain, especially if your build is supposed to spam specific skills.
  • Blood Barbs – Gain 10% of Damage as Extra Physical and Elemental Damage also Contributes to Bleeding Magnitude.
  • Open Sores – Your Curses have infinite Duration - Incredibly powerful key ascendancy node, it will remove the necessity to use curses multiple times on the same enemy and remove the need to use a support gem to raise the duration.
  • Gore Spike – 1% increased Critical Damage Bonus per 40 Life.
  • Sunder the Flesh – Base Critical Hit Chance for Spells is 15% - This will make spells with a low crit chance incredibly powerful and viable for builds that stack critical damage bonus as the main way to deal Damage.
  • Grasping Wounds – 25% of Life Loss from Hits is prevented, then that much Life is lost over 4 seconds instead - Great choice if you need more tankiness in your build, helping avoid one shots from powerful enemies.
  • Crimson Power – Gain Energy Shield from equipped Body Armour as extra maximum life.

In our experience with the Blood Mage, we took the Sanguimancy, Gore Spike, Sunder the Flesh, and Grasping Wounds, enabling and enhancing our maximum life, critical hit chance, and critical Damage stacking build.

Infernalist

infernalist ascendancy

More challenging to play and optimize than our other Ascendancy, the Infernalist will also trade her maximum life for power, but in a different way. This Ascendancy's strength comes from two different paths that will be mentioned after our skills:

  • Altered Flesh – 20% of Cold Damage taken as Fire Damage, 20% of Lightning Damage taken as Fire Damage, 20% of Physical Damage taken as Chaos Damage. This skill will help you mitigate a part of the damage taken and let you focus more on the Fire and Chaos resistances.
  • Beidat's Gaze – Reserves 25% of Life and grants +1 to Maximum Mana per 6 Maximum Life.
  • Beidat's Will – Reserves 25% of Life and offers +1 to Maximum Spirit per 25 Maximum Life.
  • Beidat's Hand – Reserves 25% of Life and rewards +1 to Maximum Energy Shield per 8 Maximum Life. These three skills will let you stack defense and resources at the cost of not being able to use most of the Maximum Life.
  • Demonic Possesion – Grants Skill: Demon Form - Increases the cast speed by 25%, grants six levels to all spell skills, and deals 18% increased spell damage per demonflare stack, at the cost of losing 0.5% of life per second per each demonflame stack. The Demonflare will accumulate each second, with no stopping until the player reaches 1 life, a moment in which it will remove the Demon Form transformation. In Demon Form, the player's weapons are disabled, so the stat bonuses from their affixes are removed from the build, and the dodge roll is replaced with a demonic dodge.
  • Mastered Darkness – Maximum 10 Demonflame - This will make the Demon Form less dangerous, limiting the increase of stats and loss of life.
SKIP THE GRIND GET CHEAP POE 2 SERVICES!
  • Pyromantic Pact – Maximum Mana is replaced by Maximum Infernal Flame. Gain Infernal Flame instead of spending mana on skill costs. Take maximum life and energy shield as Fire Damage when Infernal Flame reaches the maximum value. Lose all Infernal Flame on reaching the maximum amount. 10% of Infernal Flame lost per second if none was gained in the past 2 seconds.
  • Bringer of Flame – While not on Low Infernal Flame (higher than 35%), all Damage from you and Allies in your presence contributes to Ignite Chance and Magnitude.
  • Seething Body – While on High Infernal Flame, you and Allies in your presence gain 20% of Damage as Fire Damage. These last three skills combined will grant incredible power to your build but are very hard to manage.
  • Loyal Hellhound – 20% of Damage from Hits is taken from your Hellhound's Life before you. Grants the Summon Infernal Hound skill. This minion will mitigate a lot of Damage in its uptime, having a very low revive timer.
  • Grinning Immolation – Become Ignited when you deal a Critical Hit, taking 15% of your Life and Energy Shield as Fire Damage per second. 30% more Critical Damage Bonus.

When tested, we used the Loyal Hellhound, Pyromantic Pact, Bringer of Flame, and Seething Body, which worked great with the Detonate Dead build we used, maintaining the Infernal Flame at a constant 80-90% while spamming the detonations.

What is the best Witch Ascendancy?

When it comes to which Ascendancy is best, we simply cannot make a choice. Each Witch Ascendancy has its strengths and weaknesses and will fit a specific type of build and playstyle.

Passive Skill Tree

passive tree

The passive tree will differ depending on the build you might've already chosen. As a general rule, you should try to minimize point waste, as there are few, and the passive tree is huge.

Starting Location on the Passive Tree

The starting location for Witches is the top of the middle circle, with great choices right from the start, such as:

  • % increased maximum Energy Shield
  • % increased Mana Regeneration Rate
  • % increased Spell Damage and increased minion damage
  • % increased Cast Speed
  • % increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells and Critical Spell Damage Bonus

No matter how nice all these starting nodes look, don't get lost at the start of the passive tree, as the nodes further away will provide more powerful and diverse upgrades. Ideally, the starting point will only have one line of nodes that is directed toward the main Key Passive Nodes that will benefit the build the most.

Even if the passive skill points are few, obtaining only one per level up, completing the side-quests tied to the main quest will provide up to 24 extra passive points, so make sure you complete them. You can easily see them on the map, marked with a "+" next to the specific icon, making it very easy to keep track of your progress.

Note: Remember that you are not limited to the top of the passive tree. You can go towards and obtain any node in the whole tree, with the only limitation being the starting point and number of passive points.

Key Passive Nodes

The most critical Key Passive nodes are entirely dependent on which build you are planning on playing, but overall, we are recommending getting the ones that help most, such as these:

  • Mind Over Matter - All Damage is taken from Mana before Life, 50% less Mana Recovery Rate - This will provide a lot of survivability to any build, considering the fragility of the Witch, especially early on.
  • Chaos Inoculation - Maximum Life becomes 1, Immune to Chaos Damage - Incredibly powerful, removes the necessity to have chaos resistance on gear and allows the player to focus entirely on elemental resistance and raising the maximum energy shield as much as possible.
  • Avatar of Fire - 75% of Damage Converted to Fire Damage, Deal no Non-Fire Damage - Even if losing 25% of your Damage looks terrible, if your build runs on physical Damage, this key passive will help you multiply your Damage with certain affixes. In our experience, we used this key passive node with our Detonate Dead build, creating incredible explosions and deadly DoT ignites.

Keep in mind that taking more Key Passive Nodes is not necessarily the best move; optimizing your build with other nodes is the way to go, and keeping the path to the desired nodes as short as possible is a must when trying to hit as many nodes as possible.

Best Witch Gems

skill gems

While there is no best gem for the whole class or Ascendancy, we can categorize them as best for the respective build, and we will mention significant synergies to go with it.

Best Witch Skill Gems

  • Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Snipers, and Skeletal Arsonists - These skill gems are very powerful, especially in-game because they will divert the aggro from you and deal some damage alongside you. The warriors and arsonists are used in combination with the Skeletal Storm Mages in the Minion Army endgame build.
  • Fireball, Flame Wall, and Frost Wall - This incredible synergy will go hand in hand with the Blueflame Bracers, allowing the player to shoot fireballs through the Flame Wall first to increase their damage, then into the Frost Wall, exploding it for extra cold damage and freeze buildup, while also filling the screen with extra fireballs from the impact.
  • Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Brute, and Detonate Dead - Paired with some support gems and the Sacrifice spirit gem, Detonate Dead will allow you to sacrifice your own minions to deal great explosions that will deal with any type of enemy you encounter. Choosing between warriors and brutes is necessary; brutes have more hp that translates into damage but require more spirit to summon.

Best Witch Support Gems

As we have said before, there is no best gem for any category, with the Support Gems being no exception. Choosing your Support Gems will depend entirely on the Skill Gems chosen, the build chosen, and your playstyle. Knowing this, we will list the best support gems for the Skill Gems found in the Minion Army leveling build, as follows:

Skill Gem Support Gems
Summon Infernal Hound Elemental Army
Meat Shield
Fire Exposure
Strip Away
Unearth Minion Instability
Infernal Legion
Flammability Heightened Curse
Spell Cascade

Skeletal Arsonist Heft
Scattershot

Feeding Frenzy
Immolate
Pain Offering Magnified Effect
Persistence
Font of Rage
Grim Feast Clarity

Note: If you can't find the support gems mentioned above, press the "All Gems" button found in the bottom-left corner of the skill gem menu.

Best Witch Spirit Gems

  • Cast on Critical - Used for auto-casting a skill by placing the skill gem into a support gem slot. It will accumulate energy until reaching the max, casting the skill. This is very powerful on builds that stack "Critical Hit Chance" & "Critical Damage Bonus", charging it very fast.
  • Sacrifice - Incredible skill for the Detonate Dead build, it allows the player to sacrifice living minions instead of corpses.
  • Cast of Minion Death - Just like Cast on Critical, you accumulate energy on every Minion that is killed, and when the threshold is reached, a skill is cast automatically.
  • Blasphemy - Applies one or more socketed curses in an aura around the user at the cost of 60 spirit per curse. This works very well with Temporal Chains, slowing the enemy and making it harder to reach you.
  • Grim Feast - Another tremendous defensive option, it has a 50% chance to spawn a Remnant when an enemy or minion dies, recovering a small amount of Energy Shield when picked up.

Best Witch Unique Items

  • Blueflame Bracers - Gives the option to convert all fire damage to cold Damage. It can be combined with the Avatar of Fire key passive node mentioned above.
  • Birthright Buckle - Very powerful defensive choice, especially for the early game, it will help recover life and mana instantly when they are low0.
  • Enezun's Charge - Incredible choice for the Detonate Dead build or for skills that require corpses, it has a 25% chance of not consuming the corpse on use. In addition to that, the wand has excellent Spell Damage and Critical Hit Chance for Spells.
  • Necromantle - Another great choice for minion builds, it has the "Minions revive 50% faster" affix, raising their uptime significantly.

Witch Leveling Tips

In the following section of our guide, we will present the best tips for the leveling stage of the game to help you navigate through it easier and faster.

1. Complete the campaign & complete all side objectives

Completing the campaign is the straight path toward the early endgame, and it should be the main priority while leveling. While progressing through every map, completing the side-quests should be more important than the main quest, considering that most will provide essential permanent buffs to help you later in the game.

You can keep track of these permanent buffs by checking the map in every act (Map shortcut - U by default) and looking for icons with a "+" sign next to them. If they are greyed out, the objective has already been completed, and the buff has been awarded.

2. Always out-level the zone

In Path of Exile 2, to obtain the most experience possible from the monsters you slay, you must be in the range of the area level. Usually, the best way to go is to be at least one level under the area level.

There is also an xp limitation in place, lowering the amount of experience you gain if you are five levels higher than the zone you are in. Contrary to popular belive, being lower than the zone you are in by five levels will also lower the amount of xp you gain.

3. Check the vendors on level up

Until the early endgame, you will change your gear constantly, so obtaining more powerful items will always be a challenge. Until you can acquire enough currency to trade with other players on the popular PoE2 trade website, checking the vendor for better equipment every time you level up is the best tip we can give.

Also, having a stack of scrolls of wisdom will be very useful, as it will enable us to identify items on the fly and swap them out at a moment's notice.

4. Spend currency to craft gear pieces

Most people will keep the currency they obtain until they get an item that they deem it worth. We consider this a mistake since you will obtain currency constantly, and keeping it will only slow down your progression.

The only currencies you should keep for either trading or later use should be the more valuable ones, namely the:

  • Exalted Orbs, but only in the first one or two weeks of a new league
  • Chaos Orbs
  • Divine Orbs
SKIP THE GRIND BUY CHEAP POE 2 CURRENCY!

After reaching the early endgame, these mentioned currencies will be used to complete an endgame build, and after that, they can be used to either upgrade the build or to try and craft better items.

5. Pick up all magic, rare, and unique gear pieces and identify them to check for upgrades

As we have mentioned before, picking up the magic or better items is one of the main ways of obtaining better gear, identifying all of them, and checking if they are better than what you currently have equipped. That's why having scrolls of wisdom in the inventory is essential.

If the items you have collected are not better than what you currently have equipped, selling them is the best thing you can do. Currently, the gold obtained is mainly used to refund passive points, which are very expensive to gain back. Atlas points can also be refunded using gold but at a fixed price of 5000 gold.

If you don't have Scrolls of Identify in the inventory, we recommend filling the inventory with items, then using the portal to town, identifying them, and then either using or selling them. For this, you can use the shortcut Ctrl + click on the NPC that identifies the items, just to be a couple of seconds quicker.

6. Upgrade your skills and add supports using Uncut Gems you find

After unlocking the primary skills needed for your leveling build, you must focus on upgrading them in the order of usefulness. Mainly, you should start with the skill that you deal Damage with, or the one you use the most, and continue in the said order.

Also, filling the skill gems with support gems is mandatory, raising their power or utility even further, helping you kill monsters and save time.

League Starter Build

As a starter build, we recommend the Minion Army leveling build, as it helps you stay away from the fight. This will help you keep your distance and deal damage while not being in danger, while the minions you have summoned will face tank them.

Pro Witch Endgame Tips & Tricks

In this part of our guide, we will go into detail about the best tips and tricks about going into the end game so you will be prepared for anything that comes your way.

1. Transitioning into an endgame build with useful stats and capped resistances

Most of the time, the guides are created by professional players or streamers who have played this game for a very long time. Since they have the knowledge from either testing the build in PoE 2 multiple ways or having the knowledge from the prior game, they will optimize it in the best way so you can obtain the best build you can get.

Another crucial step while going into an endgame build is to try and cap your resistances. There are many ways to do this, especially the chaos resistance, so it shouldn't be too hard.

Constantly upgrading your build is also very important, replacing current items with ones that have higher affix rolls or even better ones.

2. Constantly use your currency to craft or buy upgrades for your gear

As we have mentioned before, using your currency will help you speed up your progress. Now that we are in the endgame, crafting or trading with other players is a must since simply farming an item with the stats needed will take an incredible amount of time.

Aside from buying, once you have a premium stash tab, you can also sell the gear you obtain and don't need, so you will have even more currency for buying the stuff you need.

3. Use the Path of Exile Trade website to look for possible upgrades using filters

In our opinion, the Path of Exile Trade website is one of the best trading options added to a video game since it is so extensive with its filters that you can find the perfect item with the exact stats and affix rolls you want.

It features a "whisper" button, which will send a direct message to the player you are trading with in-game. This makes the process way more straightforward than other trading systems, with the only step left being teleporting to the other player after inviting him to a party.

4. Use the in-game currency exchange feature for fast currency trading

You can use one of the NPC's in the game, namely Alva, while in the Hideout to exchange any currency with another. Once you have accumulated enough currencies, you can exchange them for the main currency used for trading or even exchange the main currency used for trading for other types of orbs you need.

Depending on the period of the league, different types of currency will be used for trading. For example, at the start of the league, mainly in the first one or two weeks, the Exalted Orb is the main currency, while later in the league, the Divine Orb is used.

alva-currency-exchange

5. Complete the 3rd and 4th Ascension Trials for additional Ascendancy Passive Points

The other four Ascendancy points are obtained by completing either the Trial of the Sekhemas or the Trial of Chaos, but with specific requirements:

  • For the Trial of Chaos, the number of trials must be ten to acquire the 7th and 8th Ascendancy Points.
  • For the Trial of the Sekhemas, there must be four floors to obtain the 7th and 8th Ascendancy Points.

Compared to the Trial versions already completed, these will be much harder. The trials might not be the hardest, but once you have reached the boss, you will surely need a lot of Damage and patience.

Note: Completing the Trial of the Sekhemas 4th floor or the Trial of the Sekhemas secret room will award the 7th and 8th Ascendancy points, and if you didn't complete the Trials for the 5th and 6th points before, they will also be awarded.

6. Progress through the atlas, avoiding difficult waystone modifiers

While starting to complete maps, we suggest avoiding bad waystone modifiers and simply using another one. Choosing the tier of the waystone you are trying to complete would be best by considering your build's power and survivability.

If the map is taking too long, consider lowering the tier since completing lower-tier waystones faster is more efficient than completing harder waystones very slowly.

Even the lower-tier waystones feel hard? Try buying tier 1 gray waystones from Doryani and run them without adding any modifiers until your build gets stronger or until you accommodate yourself with this endgame system.

7. Clear maps of an adequate tier based on your level

As we have mentioned before, clearing maps with lower tiers as fast as possible is better than completing them very slowly with just a few tiers higher. Also, consider keeping the area level at five levels below or above you if you want to level up since passing that limit will lower the experience you gain.

8. Play safe and avoid dying at any cost

Surviving through the maps is imperative since if you die, the map will teleport you outside and close the portals. In addition to that, you will also lose 10% of the total xp required to level up, making your progression even harder. Be mindful of your surroundings and keep your distance from the monsters.
