What are Artifacts in New World?
In this part of our article, we will talk about the general information about Artifacts, such as what they are, what do you use them for, and their types.
In New World, Artifacts are items of a new rarity, first added in Rise of the Angry Earth expansion - Season 3. They play a significant role in creating powerful builds, being a mandatory part of any end-game build for either PvE or PvP.
What do you use Artifacts for?
Artifacts in New World are used to push the power of builds to a whole new level, creating new synergies between skills, perks, and other equipment. If you want to be one of the best players, in any role or activity, using artifacts is a necessity.
In the next section of our article, we will cover the different types of artifacts found in New World.
How many artifacts are in NW?
As we speak, there are 37 Artifacts in the game, covering each equipable slot, from armors to weapons and jewelry, for every equip load. More artifacts will be added with each new season, while the artifacts obtainable from season pass will be moved to general loot table.
Artifact Types
As we have mentioned, there are artifacts available for each type of gear you can equip, for every equip load (light, medium, and heavy), so let's take a look at each type of artifact in New World:
1. Weapon Artifacts
For weapons, there is one artifact for each type of weapon and shield. These weapon artifacts can either be good for all builds or good for specific builds. For example:
- Serenity - This greatsword artifact is the BIS (best in slot) for each and every build centered around the greatsword. It has huge DPS on heavy attacks, with Refreshing Move adding a bit of cooldown reduction for the skills. Also, the perk slot is unlockable after upgrading the artifact, with a recommended Attunement (Arboreal would be one of the best) or an empty gem slot for a runeglass gem.
- Freya's Francisca - This Hatchet artifact is the best for builds centered around throwing hatchets and debuffing enemies. When it comes to builds revolving around dealing melee damage with a hatchet, this artifact lacks potential.
Note: Shield Artifacts are considered to be armor artifacts, so you can equip a Sword or Flail Artifact and combine it with one of the three shield artifacts: Michael, The Wall, or Gladiator.
2. Armor Artifacts
When it comes to armor artifacts, initially, there were a few missing pieces like heavy boots, medium boots, or light pants, but are added in Season 4.
In our experience, the best armor artifacts in New World are:
- Freedom - Incredible armor piece if you are looking for the extra crowd control reducer
- The Wall - The best tanking artifact if you are looking for a shield, it will make you unkillable if paired with other matching artifacts and a healer
- Void Darkplate - A close contender to the best tanking artifact in our opinion, the Void Darkplate will increase your armor by 20% while also reducing incoming damage. Compared to The Wall, this artifact is more versatile, being used in way more builds. Sadly, shields being considered armors and not weapons, it can't be paired with The Wall
- Michael - A very good option for both offensive and defensive, this shield will buff you up whenever you block, while also removing one debuff and reducing your cooldowns by 5%. In our opinion it is one of the best choices for medium-bruiser builds that incorporate shields
- Magnetic Gauntlets - An incredible choice for specific builds that incorporate void gauntlets, this artifact will help you reduce your VG's cooldowns with almost each attack
We will take a look at some of the best builds that are composed of artifacts and legendary items later on in the guide, so make sure to check them out.
3. Jewelry Artifacts
Often overlooked, jewelry items are just as important as the other slots. When it comes to artifacts for these category, we have a very powerful selection:
- Blooddrinker - A BIS (Best in Slot) ring for soloing activities and builds centered around lifesteal and solo-sustaining
- Endless Thirst - Another great choice when it comes to players that prefer solo content or don't have access to a healer
- Ankh - The best choice for large scale battles, like OPRs and wars, the Ankh will give you massive amounts of sustain, letting you dish even more damage in the heat of the battle
- Lost Stopwatch - The best choice for builds that are centered around CC (crowd control)
Next up, we will take a look at how many artifacts a player can equip at one time in New World.
How many artifacts can you equip in New World?
Equipping only artifacts would be way too overpowered, so the developers have implemented a limited number of artifacts that can be equipped at any given time. So you can have a maximum of 3 artifacts equipped on your character at all times as follows: 1 weapon, 1 armor piece, and 1 jewelry item.
However, that doesn't mean that you should just obtain the 3 artifacts you want to use for your build. Having all of the artifacts in your inventory can offer versatility to your build or you can change your build and artifact depending on the activity at hand.
Coming next, we'll present how you can obtain all the artifacts that were initially released prior to Season 4.
How to get Artifacts in New World?
In this section, we will talk about how you can get each and every one of the initial 29 artifacts found in New World, and how hard they are to obtain.
There are only a few sources you can get artifacts from in New World. From PvP Track, to running mutated expeditions and hunting powerful bosses, they will surely make you grind the same activity again and again until you obtain them, but they are absolutely worth it.
We will shortly categorize the Artifacts by how they are obtained:
- Serenity, Freedom, Michael, Nimble Leather Coat, Pestilence, Unyielding, Ankh - Can be obtained from PvP Track Reward - Checkpoint 3 with a minimum PvP Track Level requirement of different values ranging from 20 to 100
- Tumbler Shoes - Obtained from Outpost Rush Caches, this footwear will surely take advantage of dodging through battles
- Endless Thirst - A very interesting jewelry piece, Endless Thirst can be obtained by slaying Mahantaram in the mutated version of Savage Divide
- Attuned Leather Pants - A reward for completing the main quest in Elysian Wilds - The End of New Eden
- The Abyss and Grey Wizard's Hat - Obtained as an additional reward when closing Corrupted Breaches
- Void Darkplate - Obtained by completing Barnacles & Black Powder on at least mutation level intermediate, having a low drop chance
- The Wall - One of the most powerful artifacts found in the game, it can be obtained by finishing The Ennead expedition on a minimum level 1 mutation
- The Butcher - The sword that is used in bleed builds can be acquired by completing a minimum level intermediate Dynasty Shipyard expedition, as a reward for slaying the final boss
- Spark of Mjolnir - Obtained by slaying Chardis in any mutated Lazarus Instrumentality
- Inferno - Obtained by slaying Commander Marius in The Forge on any mutated level
- Magnetic Gauntlets - Reward for completing Tempest's Heart on any level mutation
- Freya's Francisca - This hatchet that is meant for throwing can be obtained by completing Garden of Genesis on any mutation level
- Lost Stopwatch - An amulet meant for tanking, it can be rewarded after completing any mutation level of The Depths
- Featherweight Jacket - One of the most interesting artifacts in New World, Featherweight can be obtained by slaying Ner'Mur boss found in Scalefang Enclave, Elysian Wilds. This artifact has a 10% drop chance
- Finisher - Dropped by Montrapala the Unruled, Finisher is a very powerful rapier for bleed builds
- Ghoul Gloves - This artifact can be dropped from Overgrown Guardians and Adiana's Chosen Beasts that can be found in Elysian Wilds
- Lifetaker - A very interesting addition to the void gauntlet pool, it can scale with dexterity to complement even more builds, and can be obtained by slaying Pugnacious Purutu on Isle of Zurvan, in Elysian Wilds
- Odo - An incredible flail for tanking and sustaining, it can be obtained by killing Vanash, in Tribunal Highmound, Elysian Wilds
- The Mechanic - Obtained from Toy Maker Phthah, this musket is great if you plan on using traps to your advantage
- Scorpion's Sting - Ever want to feel like Scorpion from Mortal Kombat? This spear is mainly used for its special perk, pulling healers and ranged damage dealers to them, removing their biggest advantage, the distance. It can be obtained by slaying Scorpio Supernal found in Brimstone Sands
- Djinn Headwrap - Maybe one of the artifacts with the most unique source to obtain, you will have to use a "Infused Boon of Artemis Potion" and slay Elite Beast Hoards in order to have a chance of dropping it. Because of the difficulty, the developers have added a pure RNG way to get it as well, by looting Elite Chests from Elysian Wilds
Is it hard to get artifacts in NW?
Artifacts in New World are pretty hard to get, but considering the power that they provide, it is well worth it.
The Artifacts that are obtained from pvp track leveling in checkpoint 3 have a 10% chance of being rewarded. Depending on your pvp track level, this chance goes down to under 2.5% if you are looking for a specific Artifact, like Serenity.
When we are talking about the drop chances of artifacts obtainable from mutated expeditions, these have a really low chance of dropping. Adding the fact that there's a maximum number of mutated expeditions you can do in a week, and the mutated expeditions only lasting for a week before rotating, this will require some grinding.
Maybe the easiest to obtain, aside from the season pass artifacts, the ones that drop from open world bosses are the best to go for, since there is a high chance other players will also farm the same boss and the respawn timers are not that high. This does not apply to Scorpion's Sting, since Scorpio Supernal only spawns once or twice per in-game night.
Up and coming, the artifact perks, how they can be unlocked, how many perks an artifact can have, and the quests you need to complete.
New World Artifact Perks
All artifacts come with a combination of perks, some of them unique to the artifact and some of them being normal perks, but especially designed to match with eachother, making artifacts very powerful items. All of them, except for shields, have one perk in common:
Magnify - This perk raises the highest attribute of your character by 32 to 40.
The unique artifact perks are the ones that really differentiate them from legendary items, being only obtainable on the specific artifact and offering way more potential for new builds, enhancing them with greater powers.
How to unlock Artifact perks in NW?
Each artifact comes with the unique perk or unique perks unlocked and ready to use, but the other perks will be locked behind quests and upgrading. In this part we will talk about the perk unlocking.
The developers introduced the new mechanic for artifacts in season 3 - The Rise of the Angry Earth, incentivizing players to explore more than just mutated expeditions and PvP even in the endgame. The quests that unlock perks for the artifacts range from the usual mutated expeditions and PvP battles to completely exploring the new territory, Elysian Wilds, to kill the needed monsters or bosses.
The number of unlockable perks through Artifact quests is fixed to 3. The progress on the quests can be done simultaneously, meaning there's no order in which the quests must be done.
How many perks can you get on an Artifact?
The number of perks an artifact offers ranges from 5 to 6, including the unique perk or perks, the unlockable perks, the perk obtained from upgrading the artifact at the Gypsum Kiln, and the empty socket.
At the current moment, just the shield artifacts are empowered by 5 perks, while all of the other artifacts offer 6 perks to the player. This small difference is made to balance the combination of swords or flails and shields compared to other two-handed weapons.
Artifact Quests
Despite the fact that some of the artifacts have a different number of perks, the number of perks that can be unlocked through completing quests is the same for all of them.
Each of the three unlockable perks have a quest that must be completed in order to use the artifact with its full power. These quests can be done at the same time.
Most of the artifacts have three quests that are related to each other, the only exception to this rule being the quests that will send you to complete expedition bosses. Let's take a look at some of these quests:
For Serenity, Freedom, Michael, Nimble Coat, Pestilence, Unyielding, Ankh (the artifacts that can be obtained through PvP Reward Track), it was only natural to have PvP related quests:
- Defeat 20 players in Outpost Rush - Unlocks the first hidden perk
- Defeat 20 players in 3v3 Arena - Unlocks the second hidden perk
- Defeat 35 players in open-world combat (this applies to open-world and wars) - Unlocks the third hidden perk
As for the other artifacts, compared to the ones obtained through the PvP Track, they don't have quests in common, but some of them do share the zone where the quests are located. This means players should inform themselves and make a plan before starting to unlock perks for multiple artifacts, going for full efficiency.
Some quests are the same for a few artifacts, but most of the quests are intertwined with the drop locations of other artifacts. This makes the whole artifact system extremely well connected, making it very efficient for players to farm.
For example, the quest that unlocks the first perk of Attuned Leather pants is to kill Toy Maker Phthah, the same boss that you need to constantly kill to obtain The Mechanic artifact.
In the table below, we will present the quests needed to unlock the perks for every artifact

Next up, we'll teach you how upgrade the New World Artifacts, the cost of upgrading, and the materials needed.
Upgrading Artifacts in New World
When the artifacts first came out, the popular belief was that they can only be upgraded once all the perks have been unlocked, as an extra surge of power.
That is not true at all, artifacts being ready to be upgraded from the moment you obtain them, as long as you have the required materials for this operation. This way, the system lacks the linear progression, which in our opinion is not well-received nowadays.
The cost of upgrading Artifacts
As we have said earlier, upgrading Artifacts can be done at the Gypsum Kiln, whenever the player wants to, as long as they have the following materials:
- The desired unequipped artifact
- Weapon/Armor/Jewelry Matrix
- 500 Dark Matter
- 5 Gypsum Orbs
- Chromatic Seal
- Desired craft mod - This is not a necessary step. If the player chooses to not use a craft mod when upgrading an artifact, the perk will roll randomly according to the perk pool. This is especially useful if the necessary craft mod is very expensive (like the health perk craft mod - Adamant). The perk pool can be checked on the New World Database.
Note: If the Artifact you want to upgrade is equipped, the recipe for the upgrade will not be shown in the Gypsum Kiln. This is the reason we have emphasized earlier that the artifact should be unequipped.
The Materials required to upgrade Artifacts in NW
- Weapon Matrix - Necessary only if you want to upgrade a Weapon Artifact, it can be crafted by combining 250 Azoth, 1 Enchanted Handle, and either a Tempered Cast or Honing Acid. The requirement for this craft is either level 250 Weaponsmithing for the recipe including the Tempered Cast or level 250 Engineering for the recipe including the Honing Acid.
- Armor Matrix - Necessary only if you want to upgrade an Armor Artifact, it can be crafted by combining 250 Azoth, and either 1 Tempered Cast and Honing Acid, or 1 Blessed Rivets and 1 Reinforced Bracing. The requirement for this craft is level 250 Arcana for the recipe including the Tempered Cast and Honing Acid, or level 250 Armoring for the recipe including Blessed Rivets and Reinforced Bracing respectively.
- Jewelry Matrix - Necessary only if you want to upgrade a Jewelry Artifact, it can be crafted by combining 250 Azoth, 1 Blessed Rivets, and 1 Honing Acid. The requirement for this craft is level 250 Jewelcrafting.
- Enchanted Handle - Requires level 250 Armoring and is crafted by combining 250 Azoth, 2 Prismatic Ingots, 2 Prismatic Planks, 2 Prismatic Leather, and 5 Gypsum Orbs
- Tempered Cast - Can be crafted with 250 Azoth, 2 Prismatic Ingots, 2 Prismatic Clothes, 2 Prismatic Leather, 5 Gypsum Orbs, and requires level 250 Weaponsmithing
- Honing Acid - Crafted using 250 Azoth, 2 Prismatic Leather, 2 Prismatic Block, 25 Infused Alkahest, and 5 Gypsum Orbs, this recipe requires level 250 Arcana
- Blessed Rivets - Requires level 250 Jewelcrafting, and can be crafted by combining 250 Azoth, 2 Prismatic Ingot, 2 Prismatic Block, 25 Powerful Gemstone Dust, and 5 Gypsum Orbs
- Reinforced Bracing - Can be crafted with 250 Azoth, 2 Prismatic Planks, 2 Prismatic Clothes, 2 Prismatic Blocks, and 5 Gypsum Orbs. This will require level 250 Engineering
- 500 Dark Matter - The hardest part of the recipe, Dark Matter can be obtained in a plethora of ways, but the most effective are: Killing the Raid Boss, salvaging legendary gear, Mutated Expeditions, Elite Chest Runs, Outpost Rush, etc.
- 5 Gypsum Orbs
- Chromatic Seal
Next up, let's check out if there are any other ways to obtain artifacts in New World. Shall we?
Can you buy, sell, or trade artifacts in New World?
In this section of our guide we will talk about the trade economical point of the Artifacts, whether you can buy, sell or trade them.
Can you buy artifacts in NW?
Sadly, artifacts can't be bought through conventional ways, through player-to-player trade or trade post. That didn't stop us from finding a way for players to be able to obtain the artifacts without grinding hours upon hours for them. Artifacts can be bought from boosting service providers like us.
Can you sell artifacts in New World?
Artifacts can't be sold, since they can only be obtained once per character.
Can you trade artifacts in NW?
Artifacts can't be traded either, being account-bound.
Coming up, we'll take a look and go into detail about the Seasonal Artifacts.
Seasonal Artifacts
Season 4 introduces eight brand new artifacts to the game, filling the missing pieces from season 3. These 8 new artifacts will soon reset the meta builds, so make sure to read this article until the end, and check out the best ways to use them. Let's take a look at what's new:
- Boltcaster - This incredible bow transforms 99% of the damage it deals to lightning damage, while also increasing the lightning damage dealt by 20% for both of the equipped weapons. The initial version of Bolt has been changed to empower basic attacks after reaching 3 stacks, since the bow is already a very powerful weapon, even without the lightning damage transformation. It can be obtained by slaying Annoyed Aguascia, found on the Isle of Zurvan in Elysian Wilds
- Vengeance - This lifestaff promotes a more aggressive playstyle for healers, stacking Nature's Vengeance up to 20 times, increasing the damage dealt by 1% for each of the stacks, up to 20 times each time you heal somebody. It can be paired with a flail or void gauntlet for incredible build synergy. It can appear as a reward in the 3rd checkpoint of Pvp Track, after reaching level 20
- Gladiator - This round shield offers a very aggressive set of perks, being great for assassin type of builds. Since shields are considered armor and not weapons, Gladiator can be paired with The Butcher, so you can make enemies bleed when you are attacked and while you are attacking. You can get your hands on this amazing round shield artifact by killing Tribunal Ice Mammoths throughout the Elysian Wilds
- Winged Leather Shoes - Insane armor piece that offers 50% increased base duration of haste buffs on your character, it will enable all the builds that are based on chasing targets, being the worst nightmare of a healer. It can be obtained by completing level 20 of the season pass as a free reward
- Quickdraw Gloves - These light gloves introduce a new mechanic to the game. While swapping weapons, you will become immune for 0.5 seconds, making it very interesting to be seen in builds it will be used in. It can be obtained by completing the season pass, being found as a reward on level 100
- Deep Freeze - An ice gauntlet with incredible power, its unique perk makes targets that are frozen, rooted, or chilled take 15% additional damage, and this perk works on both equipped weapons. In combination with the Unbroken Winds perk, it will enable very fun ice gauntlet builds. You can obtain this ice gauntlet by slaying the Ice Troll in Mutated Glacial Tarn
- The Unmoved - A great addition to the heavy armor artifact set, its unique perk makes you a "mountain", making you immune to any form of displacement. It will be a great contender for any armor artifact when it comes to PvP, so make sure to obtain it. The Unmoved can appear randomly on the PvP Rewards Track, on the 3rd checkpoint, after level 20
- Koya's Knee Guards - The final piece of the light armor set, its unique perk and standard perks are a direct counter to bow and musket players, heavily reducing incoming ranged physical damage. This artifact will be used by specific builds that require that extra defense against bowmen, in PvP scenarios. You can obtain this artifact by opening Outpost Rush Caches
Note: This artifacts are subject to change, the perks and the values can be changed meanwhile, but we will make sure to update this guide whenever it happens.
